The Mean Girls guide to marketing communities

September 6, 2024
Arina Kharlamova

"Show me your friends and I’ll tell you who you are” has never been more real—which is why we sourced this no-BS list of 13+ fab marketing communities.

You take a deep breath, push open the cafeteria doors, and step into the lion’s den.

As the 2004 cult classic, Mean Girls, taught us all: “Where you sit in the cafeteria is crucial.

Let’s put the debate of whether this movie has aged well aside (for now), and respect the truth of that statement. Because that certainly hasn’t changed.

Your community—who you sit with—is crucial to your career, and often, your wellbeing.

Do you care more about building connections with people who can act as sounding boards, cheerleaders, door openers, and educators. Or, would you rather be a wallflower and watch in-depth discussions happen on certain topics?

What you want out of a community can determine which community is best for you.

But, finding your people online can be hard. There’s a million communities all claiming to be #1, but they can’t all be the best, right?

That’s why we want to break down the top marketing communities for you (the lay of the lunchroom-land, so to speak)… so you can make a more informed decision of who to sit with, and why.

What makes a great marketing community?

You don’t want to join a community that’s riddled with spam and an endless stream of self-promoting posts.

You want a community that…

  • Helps you learn from experienced marketers you respect at companies you admire
  • Provides warm introductions and authentic connections that advance your career
  • Has real tactical examples—whether in the chats, webinars, or Q&As—of marketing playbooks
  • Connects you to people who are happy to help you get a leg up
  • Is led by people who value the importance of connections
  • Isn’t too big to get lost in—but not too small that it gets quiet
  • Offers insider info about new jobs, projects, and opportunities that you won’t find anywhere else
  • Teaches you in a way you like learning
  • Doesn’t spam you with offers, promos, or anything else

Ultimately, good communities don’t feel like spam—they feel like friendships.

13+ Marketing communities you could join (if ya wanted to)

Yes, we ranked them based on awesomeness. Just kidding. (Or are we?)

The only acronym we will accept here is MKTG WMN, mainly because we know how impactful (and detrimental) Boys Clubs are—and how big that networking gap is for women.
